But fret not as May is the National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.

The Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America (AFFA) has seen the rising number of patients suffering from emergency allergic reactions during March, April, and May every year. It was then that AFFA decided to spring to action and take prevention and awareness to a whole new level.

True to the adage: prevention is better than the cure, the Asthma Awareness Month aims to educate everyone about identifying allergy triggers and how to control them. Celebrate the joys of asthma prevention by having a support group within your family and network of friends.

Remember, your surroundings play a major role to your asthmatic health. Tell your peers about your condition so in the next party you will not be given a peanut dish by mistake. Or they will understand why you’d rather skip a lawn picnic in springtime. They’ll also know what hypoallergenic gift they can give you next company Christmas party.

Join in an asthmatics anonymous group within your community. If you can’t find any then make one. There is no greater feeling than knowing that you are not suffering asthma alone. Keep in touch with them regularly through meetings and online forums to be updated about pollen count, allergy management tips, and so much more.

Be an asthma and allergy advocate in your own right. Be in the know of the latest trends and technology. Did you know that there are now hypoallergenic hotels? The PURE Room is an allergy friendly hotel room specially designed to ward off allergens. This is a great help when you are away from home. Find a PURE Room today.

Super Foods that fight Asthma and Allergies!

Healthy Lifestyle

allergies

allergy food

Asthma

asthma symptoms

fight asthma

hypoallergenic

A food for thought: what should you eat to prevent your asthma triggers? Fruits are good sources of vitamins but some can set off allergic reactions. Stock your pantry with food items that are medically-proven to fight asthma.

Fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C. Popeye was right, spinach is the answer. Other than that, broccoli, bell pepper, and kale are good sources of ascorbic acid, too. Mangoes are often linked to asthma attacks. Opt for oranges, strawberries, blue berries, and melons as they neutralize free radicals.

Food rich in Vitamin E. Tocopherol is an antioxidant which decreases the risk of asthma symptoms like wheezing and cough.

Add quercetin in your diet. What’s up with the queer name when it’s an antioxidant, anti-histamine, and anti-inflammatory all rolled into one! Asthma sufferers can get their dose of this bioflavonoid by eating red onions, apples, red grapes, cherries, raspberry, and red wine.

Got herbs? Apart from their culinary use, herbs like rosemary, peppermint, thyme, marjoram, and oregano are dietary sources of rosmaniric acid. The latter keeps the lungs for easier breathing.

Omega-3 Fats. Oily food is a nemesis to an asthmatic. But Omega-3, the good fat, have anti-inflammatory properties. Sources of this essential fatty acid is found in salmon, cod, halibut, flaxseeds, and soy.

What to cut back. Eat dairy products and egg sparingly. Salty food and those that are preserved in a can induce allergies. Don’t do Chinese takeout dinners every often because they contain a lot of monosodium glutamate. Other ingredients to look out for on the food label are: tartazine (artificial food coloring), benzoate (soft drinks), and anything with preservatives.

It is best to eat fresh and organic produce. Don’t forget that there are other triggers such as dusts and mites, so make sure your home is clean with constant fresh air. Don’t let your asthma keep you from visiting the breathtaking sights in Vietnam, Cambodia, Maldives, Philippines, or wherever your nomadic adventure takes you. Here are tips on how to prevent an asthma attack while you are in a warmer clime.

Be safe. This is the rule of thumb when traveling. The tropical weather can be a friend or foe when it comes to your health. Always have your first aid kit near you. If you are traveling alone, share you itinerary with a trusted friend and carry a mobile device with you.

Tell your doc. Tell your doctor that you will be traveling to some place where the weather’s hotter. Whether you are staying for a short time (business trip) or a longer one (backpacking), you should stock up on asthma medicines and inhalers. Your medication might not be available abroad. Best of all, ask for a doctor’s certification. Who would want to get held up by the customs officer?

Go hypoallergenic. Yes, you may be traveling light but don’t miss out on things that could save your life like a hypoallergenic towel that could double up as a blanket when you are inside a dusty traveler’s lodge. Bringing your own hypoallergenic mattress cover is not a bad idea, either. Dust mites thrive well in hot climate.

Check the ingredient. Although food tasting is part of every travel adventure, always be wary of ingredients and food additives that could trigger your asthma. Asian cuisines often contain traces of palm oil and peanuts. Be careful when eating fish, shrimps, and shellfish, and have your medication at bay.

Whether the weather. Hello, monsoon season! Hello, pollen and spores! Wind changes below the equator are unpredictable at times. Check the local weather report before heading out for a swim in the ocean or hike in the tropical rainforest. Pollen count data may not be readily accessible. To be sure, have a hypoallergenic cover-up that you can wrap around your face when traveling.

Find a Pure Room. Staying at a hypoallergenic hotel is not luxury. It could save your life from asthma attics and other allergic reactions. A new environ may not be safe all the time. But good news as PURE now has allergy-friendly rooms outside North America. Find a PURE Room in Brazil, India, Malaysia, Aruba, and even as far as Trinidad and Tobago!

16 Hypoallergenic Beauty Tips to Prettify Your Allergy Face

Allergies

allergy

beauty tips

health

healthy life

hypoallergenic

Like millions of other women suffering from seasonal allergies, spring allergies may be affecting your healthy lifestyle and self-esteem. With that Rudolph red nose, blood shot or swollen eyes and bloated face, you probably hate showing up for work or dressing up to go clubbing – you may event want to cancel spring break altogether. According to a recent survey published on endlessbeauty.com, beauty-related allergy statistics show that:

1. Spring clean your makeup kit. More than a year old makeup may significantly contribute to having an allergy face – so stick to the recommended prescription period as listed below:
• Mascara should only be kept for 2 to 3 months
• Throw out foundation and concealer after 6 months
• Keep your eye shadow and blusher for no more than 12 months

2. Use a couple of pillows while sleeping so you can elevate your head and keep the fluid away from puffing up your face.
3. Avoid putting tons of makeup to conceal your allergies. Instead, use damp makeup brushes to apply makeup and create a dramatic but natural effect.
4. Use naked eye shadow that consists of softer hues and less pigments to lighten up your eyes and diminish the puffy and watery effect caused by allergies.
5. Rub on some concealer beneath your eyes and towards the bridge of your nose.
6. Put on golden eye liner to the inner corners of your eyes.
7. Go with the bold brow trend where you can shape your brows to get that fresh, wide-eyed look without having to rely heavily on eye shadow. But go easy on the penciling, you do not want have a permanently surprised look on your face.
8. Get rid of that Rudolph red nose by applying illuminating powder or liquid on your cheekbones. This highlights your cheeks and draws attention away from your nose.
9. Steer clear of red and pink hues – you will only increase the visibility of your symptoms. Go for brown and gold colors instead.
10. To conceal redness in the eye area or rashes on the face, invest on a high quality bronzer with some shimmer and brown undertones.
11. Tired of make-up? Use a self tanner to conceal your symptoms. Make sure that you choose a tanning lotion that can give you a long lasting natural glow for a fresh healthy look.
12. Swollen eyes? Think twice before putting on glasses because they can help increase the puffy look.
13. Use a cooling mask or aloe for soothing and reducing the swelling of your eyes.
14. Only use high quality makeup and other cosmetics.
15. Don’t forget to consult your allergy specialist or dermatologist to determine which brand will suit your skin best.
16. Give watermelon juice a try! This drink is rich in water and antioxidants that will help eliminate that puffy look on your face.

Now that you’ve got your beauty and make up tips, always make sure to beat allergies before they creep up on you. PURE recommends keeping your indoor environments clean at all times with our hypoallergenic products such as PURE air purifiers and pillow and mattress encasements. Although it’s very tempting to deprive your daughter from dance class or prevent your son from joining the Little League, experts say that an effective exercise program decreases symptoms and lessens the need for medications.

“Exercise is good for kids for so many reasons,” says Christina Scirica, a pediatric pulmonologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. This is most especially true for obese children, who have more potential for suffering from harder-to-treat asthma, and one way to help lessen attacks is by losing the weight through exercise and healthy diet.

Unfortunately, there are many parents who start to panic the moment their children experience shortness of breath during a strenuous activity. Well there’s no need to make things worse by panicking and getting breathless yourself. According to bostonglobe.com, “kids and parents should be familiar with the difference between an asthma attack and normal exertion from exercise.”

If your son plays basketball and experiences shortness of breath, of course that’s normal. All of us who exercise have felt that. However, when your little girl is running around the yard and then suddenly stops to cough, wheeze or complain that her chest is tightening, that’s most probably an asthma attack. This is a great time for your kid to take a rest, and if needed, her medication.

To help prevent asthma attacks during a workout or a sports activity, the first step for you is to consult a physician to see how you can have your kid’s asthma well under control. Your specialist may prescribe any of the following:

Daily medications

Pre-exercise bronchodilator

Additional dosage in case of an on-coming attack

Although it’s too easy to get paranoid, Dr. Scirica assures parents that in most cases, “asthma can be managed quite well without too much medication.” A bittersweet example would be a 15 year old sophomore football player who was quite an asthmatic athlete. According to his coach, he was a strong, talented, great kid. ”Demerio had pretty severe asthma, he was mature about it and knew when he could push through it during practice and when he had to stop and take a breathing treatment,” says Fremd Head Football Coach Lou Sponsel.

So even if your kid is not on the playing field, there are still other triggers looming about. We at PURE always emphasize asthma prevention and management to avoid surprises and potential danger. So always remind your kid to warm up before doing high intensity activities and avoid exercising if they are suffering from colds or flu. But do not end up a couch potato or someone who is afraid to go outside. That could make allergies more sever. Always avoid areas with high pollution, pollens and other allergens. Keep hypoallergenic products such as our tea tree oil and anti allergen spray handy and install our PURE air purifiers in your home. In his blog post published last March 15, he described how in his mid 20s, he suddenly found himself keeping an EpiPen handy and double checking restaurant menus. “It started about two years ago, when I resolved to be healthier. I swore off Doritos for breakfast and bought a juicer,” he wrote.

However, a few months after he started his healthy lifestyle, he started coughing after downing a tall glass of fresh carrot-apple juice. “I coughed until I threw up. My skin tingled and itched, it turned beet red — from my face down to my chest. Hives started creeping out from under my sleeves toward my hands. I consider myself fortunate that my symptoms didn’t include my throat closing.”

Tutton had himself checked and the diagnosis was carrot allergies, although carrots never caused him any misery in the past. If you’ve had a similar experience and is as surprised as he was, then you may be interested to know that allergies can show up suddenly & unexpectedly, regardless of how old you are. And it could be anything; whether you’re eating carrots or walking through a pet store.

And guess what the main culprit may be for adult onset allergies? Pollen. According to Dr. Scott Sicherer of the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai, there are instances when an adult becomes allergic or increasingly allergic when exposed to pollens. Furthermore, there are proteins similar to pollen in fruits and vegetables such as carrots. This means that eating a carrot is akin to ingesting pollens.

Dr. Sicherer, who is also a medical adviser for the Food and Allergy Research and Education added: “This, however, applies only to raw fruits and vegetables, since cooking breaks down the offending proteins. The other foods that more often trigger allergy in adults are shellfish, fish, tree nuts and peanuts.”

Brian Brault, CEO of PURE NA states that “All of our research shows a general connection between airborne pollen allergies and the pollens that are found in food.” About 70 percent of those with pollen allergies experience unpleasant reactions after eating certain foods.

And if you think enjoying a good meal is hard enough for sufferers, you probably haven’t heard that climate change and last year’s Superstorm Sandy could make the allergy season a bit worse this year. Increased pollen levels have been observed and two factors which greatly contributed to this are the mild winter and mold from standing water left from the storm.

PURE recommends these tips to help you manage the allergy season:
1. Use hypoallergenic pillow and mattress encasements and replace them on a regular basis.
2. Take a shower and wash your hair after a day outdoors.
3. Clean your house twice a week to get rid of dust, mites and other allergens.
4. Bathe your pets on a regular basis
5. Install air purifiers and regularly change the filters
6. Keep your indoor environment cool and dry
7. Keep your windows closed
8. Replace your air conditioning filters regularly
9. Be updated with pollen counts and pollen forecasts

Sneezing, wheezing, coughing, itching and swelling are tagging along with the return of spring. The best that you can do to avoid the misery is to stay in a safe and healthy environment with clean, fresh air. No? Ok, who thinks that air fresheners make your lungs smell better? Anyone…….. Bueller? Whether you suffer from allergies and asthma or not, no one likes it when any of these things happen. And for the millions of us who can be incapacitated when it does, it can ruin your day, week or if you are in a hotel room, it could ruin your vacation. Unfortunately, many times when we check into a hotel room, the surfaces and air are filled with ammonia, bleaching agents, and fragrances which are just waiting to be consumed by us!

The prevalence of these unhealthy conditions has been brought to light by an article on HIVEHEALTHMEDIA.COM. The article Work Related Asthma – Are you at Risk lists 18 high risk jobs linked to adult asthma cases and on the top of the list were Housekeeping and General Cleaning occupations. These are the people who are cleaning your hotel room on a daily basis. In the article, Dr. Josep Anto from the Municipal Institute of Medical Research in Spain indicates that 1 out of every 8 woman with a cleaning position suffered from Asthma and 1 out of every 6 suffered from bronchitis. Why, you may ask, are these people so prone to these afflictions? Well that’s because every day they are inhaling the bleach, ammonia and fragrances they are using to clean your room. Who wants to inhale that?!!?

Now, you may be asking yourself how you can avoid these conditions when you and your family are in a hotel room. One thing you can do is to make a special request during the reservation process to have harmful or offensive cleaning chemicals, laundry detergents and fragrances not be used in your room. Or you can stay in a hotel that offers Pure Rooms. When you are in a Pure Room, the chances that you will come in contact with any offending allergy or asthma trigger are virtually zero. That is because all of the air in a Pure Room is filtered and purified every 15 minutes. So, if a housekeeper accidently sprays an air freshener in your room, all that air freshener will be sucked up into the carbon filter in the air purifier and be trapped safely away from you and your family.

Pure Rooms can be found nationwide in every major travel destination. Recent study suggests that constant exposure to BPA may result in a child being more prone to developing asthma, even when surrounded by pollution-free environment and fresh air.

Childhood asthma is the latest addition to the list of health problems associated with BPA.
Excessive exposure to BPA, which can be found in the linings of metal cans with food and in a lot of plastic containers, particularly hard plastics and even thermal paper check out receipts has been previously linked to a variety of other health issues such as childhood obesity, increase in blood sugar/ diabetes, heart disease, future kidney disease and even behavioral issues. Research shows that the chemical disrupts the body’s production of certain hormones.

The new study, published in the March issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, has been conducted the same way as dozens of other studies from before. Researchers examined urine samples for BPA levels and matched these up with rates of a specific illness and in this case, asthma. They began measurements during the third trimester of pregnancy and continued to do so when the children turned 3 and 5 and until 7 years old. The team of researchers worked with 568 women who were participants of a study on mothers, newborns and environmental exposures.

The findings include the following:
• 90% of the children already have BPA in their system every time the team measured.
• 40% increased risk of asthma in inner city children.
• There is higher risk of asthma and wheezing for kids who are exposed to BPA after they were born.

According to study leader Dr. Kathleen Donohue, an allergist and immunologist at the Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons, “The increased risk was modest but consistent with previous studies linking high BPA levels in pregnant women’s urine with the baby’s risk of developing asthma later on.”

“As in all such studies, what we see is an association, not necessarily causation, but our finding suggests that BPA exposure during childhood may increase the risk of asthma. Asthma prevalence increased over the past 30 years, which suggests that some as-yet-undiscovered environmental exposures may be implicated,” she said.

Even if the study is not conclusive about the direct link of BPA to asthma, a PURE allergy expert still sees potential and serious health risks. “Even the federal government was pressured to ban the chemical, especially those found in food containers. BPA was banned in baby bottles and sippy cups by the FDA last July 2012, so this means that there is something really risky about constant exposure to this chemical,” says the specialist from PURE.

PURE suggests using more glass, porcelain or metal containers for storing food and beverage. Avoid number 3 and 7 plastic containers and eat less canned food or choose those with BPA-free printed on the packaging.

“The PURE organization is constantly on its toes to provide safe and hypoallergenic solutions to ensure healthy surroundings and fresh air indoors. However, if people and children are constantly exposed to environmental factors such as cigarette smoke and BPA, there’s only so much our products can do. That’s why; information campaign is also major priority for us. We want the people to be aware of the risks,” he adds.

About PURE Solutions North America
PURE Solutions’ innovative system for hotels and conference centers provides PURE rooms, an allergy-friendly room which results in indoor environments that have been treated to remove 98-100% of bacteria and viruses. This is especially true for young or first time parents. As one of these parents, you only want your child to have nothing but fresh air and eat healthy, hypoallergenic food. And why not? A single whiff of a peanut may send your little boy or girl straight to the emergency room.

However, this new report could maybe confuse you a bit. The March 5 issue of Wall Street Journal reported that a recent article from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology is suggesting that parents introduce “highly allergenic foods such as peanut butter, fish and eggs” to 4 to 6-month old babies. The report said that introducing these types of food early on “may even play a role in preventing food allergies from developing.”

This is a total turnaround from the long-standing recommendations of the experts at the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2000, the organization published guidelines which discouraged parents from exposing very young children to allergenic foods such as peanuts, shrimps and eggs. Furthermore, the AAP strongly advised parents not to introduce milk until 1 year old, eggs until 2 years old and peanuts until 3 years old.

But with the results of the new study by the AAAAI, you may wonder if overprotecting your child from allergenic foods may be doing more harm than good. The results showed that British Jewish children were 10 times more susceptible to peanut allergies compared to Israeli children. So what’s the main difference? The British children were exposed to nuts only upon reaching a year old while the kids from Israel were exposed to nuts at an early age – in fact, some were even fed peanut-laden food just a few months after birth.

The article further reported that based on findings by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, children below 5 years old who are affected by food allergies are estimated to be around 5%. Also, the occurrence of food allergies in children below 18 years old increased by 18% from 1997 to 2007. More importantly, the article recommended introducing highly allergic foods to babies, such as wheat, soy, milk, tree nuts and even shellfish may be done during the early stages of infancy.

Here are other theories from the study published by the Wall Street Journal:

Early introduction of highly allergenic food is vital so that the baby’s immune system will be exposed during a “critical window”, the time when the baby starts eating solid food, which is from 4 to 6 months old.

There are parents who are way overprotective when it comes to exposing their kids to germs and allergens, which may eventually put the development of their immune systems all the more at risk.

Basic child nutrition needs to be reexamined closely since there have been findings linking Vitamin D and food allergies. Vitamin D deficiency discovered in 5000 babies was linked to the probability of these babies being 3x more likely to be susceptible to food allergies.

Of course, all these may sound confusing for you as a parent after having gone to all the trouble to feed your child nothing by hypoallergenic food. What if giving your child some eggs will trigger a severe reaction? The best thing to do, according to AAAAI is to gradually introduce allergic foods, such as nuts and eggs, right after your baby begins to tolerate the regular baby foods. More importantly, according to Dr. Clifford Bassett of foxnew.com, “parents should always discuss the early introduction of these foods (particularly with a strong family history of allergies) with their pediatricians and/or a pediatric allergist.”

Of course, don’t forget that there are other triggers such as dusts and mites, so make sure your home is clean with constant fresh air. As Robin Williams once said, spring is nature’s way of saying “Let’s Party!” But while nature may be partying its way to summer, for us life goes on. There’s work, there’s school, there’s spring break, there’s spring cleaning – there is a lot of business to attend to. And if you’re one of the not-so-fortunate, there’s the seasonal allergies called hay fever to deal with. And you’re not alone in your quest for preventing allergies.

As millions of people look forward to spring fever, millions also dread the onslaught of hay fever. This malady can occur either indoors or outdoors so there’s no hiding from runny nose, constant sneezing or coughing, itchy eyes, sore throat and worse, wheezing. The following elements may trigger your respiratory allergy:

Mold spores

Asbestos

Smoke fumes

Pollen

Dust

However, according to experts, hay fever generally occurs when your body has an excessive buildup of mucus. “Mucus harbors environment irritants,” says Dr. Lindsey Duncan, ND, CN. However, before you grab some common drugstore meds or your usual prescription, keep in mind that these drugs in general only cover up the symptoms of allergy. Plus, frequent intake could lead to greater dependence on the medication. “When taken for long periods, steroid drugs do not cure and often make hay fever allergies worse by depressing immune defenses and impeding allergen elimination,” Dr. Duncan adds.

So that you can manage your allergies without getting too dependent on medications, here are some expert tips on how to avoid hay fever the natural way.

Eat Right

As much as possible, don’t consume too much food that formulates mucus in your system such as dairy. Lessen you intake of preserved foods, caffeine and sugar. This kind of unhealthy diet decreases the detoxification in the blood, can cause liver problems and increases allergic reactions. The recommended foods include:

Fresh fruit and vegetables

Whole grains

Yogurt and other foods with active cultures

Vitamin C-rich food such as berries and citrus

Fish oil supplements or oily seafood like salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines and albacore tuna (2 to 3x per week)

Cabbage, garlic and other sulfur-rich foods

Foods with omega-3 such as spinach and seaweeds

Nettle tea (3 to 5 cups daily)

Dandelion tea

Milk thistle

Spring Cleaning

While it is quite difficult to control outdoor allergens, you can certainly help create an allergy-free indoor environment. Check out our PURE products and learn more about having fresh, clean surroundings in your home or office. Our state of the art air filter systems will help you easily get rid of pet dander, pollen, mold spore, smoke and dust. Other tips for getting your indoor environment fresh and ready for spring time include:

Using toiletries, cosmetics and household products that are natural and unscented.

Vacuuming your carpets and draperies on a regular basis.

Clearing up unnecessary clutter to lessen dust buildup.

Having a separate room or storage for shoes and clothing you wore outdoors.

Bathing and grooming your cats and dogs on a frequent basis.

Installation of air filters and using allergy-friendly products such as those available.

Improving Lifestyle Habits

Living a healthier lifestyle may sound like a tedious option, but being sedentary or indulging in a smoking habit can really increase your chances of allergy attacks. So here are some reminders of what to do:

Quit smoking

Avoid secondary smoke

Exercise regularly. It’s ideal to combine 2 to 3 exercise methods such as yoga, weight training and zumba. Or you can do tai chi, yoga and some time on the treadmill. The variety allows your workout sessions to be more effective in boosting your immune system.

Workout in an allergy-friendly indoor environment to lessen pollen exposure.

If you’re up to alternative remedy, consult a licensed acupuncturist on how this 3,000-year old Chinese practice can help alleviate your allergies.

Try out one of the ayurvedic medicine treatments, the neti pot. This has also been around for thousands of years and has been proven to remove allergens and irritants from your sinuses without the adverse effects of pharmaceutical decongestants. The neti pot is available in health stores and the packaging comes with application instructions.

Here at PURE, we always recommend the safest choices to preventing allergies. However, we’re not discouraging you from taking pharmaceutical medications, we’re just making you aware that there can be possible adverse effects and that there are alternative ways available. As always, don’t forget to consult your doctor first. Well, for a lot of us it’s finally being able to get away from the ice, cold and snow we’ve been stuck to for the past several months. Whether it’s the freezing cold that’s driving you towards a sunny place or maybe you’ve had your fair share of blue skies and would want to have a taste of winter before summer comes, a lot of Spring Break destinations have just the kind of climate you’re looking for.

We’ve talked to a lot of friends and colleagues who love to travel and we were able to compile some of the best Spring Break destinations this year. For 2013, PURE recommends the following:

Palm Springs, California

Why there? It is fun, it’s sunny and you can expect a lot of activities for the whole gang. Accommodations usually include a lot of swimming pools, golf courses, great food and in-house activities for the kids and grownups.

Things to do: Aside from relaxing in a Palm Springs resort, you can enjoy a lot of outdoor activities right outside the city, such as hiking, camping, nature tours and of course a lot of sunbathing in the gorgeous beaches around the area.

Miami Beach, Florida

Why there? If you’re looking for some serious 24/7 fun, then venture out into the shores of “America’s Riviera”. For kid-friendly beaches, head on to North Miami Beach where you’ll also find some note worthy Art Deco Architecture and affordable accommodations and dining options. Meanwhile, at the southernmost neighborhood is the popular SoBe or South Beach where the high-end stuff is located.

Things to do: If endless sunbathing and partying still leave you wanting more, try out the South Beach and Art Deco tour or explore the neighborhood called Ocean Drive, arguably one of the most famous boulevards around the world. Not shy? Then clothing-optional beaches Haulover Beach Park or Lummus Park are places you may enjoy.

Fond of beaches and sunshine? Other top Spring Break destinations include Punta Cana, South Padre Island, Hawaii & Cancun.

Lake Tahoe, California

Why there? If skiing or snowboarding is your thing, then you might want to give in to the urge before summer comes or duty calls. There are a lot of winter sports facilities in this area, which allows you to find one that suits your budget – whether it’s in the North or South.

Things to do: You can go snowmobiling, fishing or enjoy lots of water sports. Top spots to visit include Tallac Historic Site, Eagle Falls Trail & Emerald Bay State Park. Board the tram at The Gondola, Heavenly and enjoy breathtaking views or give in to the call of history at Vikingsholm.

Vermont

Why there? If you’re looking for the finest skiing slopes on the East Coast, then head on to Vermont’s Killington, Mt. Snowe and Stowe. Aside from the great outdoor activities, there are always fun events to go to and special vacation packages. You can take part in a quilting event or enjoy the Brewfest at Smuggs.

Things to do: Immerse yourself in the serenity and scenic community by buying off food from every stall at Church Park and go off to Waterfront Park to have a picnic. You can watch the sunset from Perkins Pier and experience the taste of real maple syrup.

Can’t get enough of snow? Other top destinations include Colorado, Wyoming and Utah.

New York, New York

Why there? If you want to bask in culture rather than nature during Spring Break, then New York is one of the best places in the world to be. You can take all your time inspecting historical sites, museums, aquariums, the bright shopping scene and the eclectic cuisine.

Things to do: Aside from visiting Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, you can also hang out at Central Park, take a stroll down the West Village or have a glimpse of an old New York inside the Grand Central Terminal.

Looking for more of the city scene on Spring Break? We think you’ll enjoy all the culture in Chicago and San Francisco, as well.

And if you’re looking forward to a more convenient and healthier Spring Break vacation, what better place to stay than in an allergy-friendly PURE hotel room? Located in partner hotels across the country, each PURE Room is treated with the latest hypo-allergenic technologies, so you are sure that everything is clean – down from the carpets, to the doorknobs and up to the light bulbs. Plus, you won’t have trouble finding and booking a PURE Room, coz our search tool will do all the hard work for you. Simply click here and find a safe and clean accommodation for your Spring Break.

Fresh News for Delray Beach Fitness Enthusiasts

Healthy Lifestyle

clean and fresh environment

Delray Beach

fitness

fitness enthusiasts

health

health and fitness

health fitness

making lives better

pure rooms

pure solutions

If you’re a fitness buff in Delray Beach, Florida, getting in tip top shape is now, more than ever, easier and healthier. Whether you’re doing cardio or toning your muscles, rest assured that you’re drawing in some of the cleanest air in any fitness center around the world. What’s more, rather than offering a repetitive cycle of formal workout regimes (which sometimes can be tedious and results in boredom, no-show and eventually, downhill slide) their semi-private personal training session, also dubbed as “Slashes”, are on rotation cycle every day. So if you want to catch them, there’s no need to be on the adjust-your-schedule-or-miss-a-training option. And you can’t miss your preferred sessions, especially now that PURE is in the house. So you can do your routines in a place that’s not only dedicated to fitness, but to health and wellness as well, thanks to the PURE Rooms technology.

The PURE Commitment

Making Lives Better. Providing allergy-friendly, comfortable and healthy breathing environments – this is the commitment of PURE Solutions NA. Aside from our patented conversion process they also have a range of the latest hypoallergenic products. PURE started out with providing in-home allergy friendly products to our customers while ensuring the availability of allergy friendly hotel rooms throughout the country. Today, we’ve partnered with hundreds of hotels worldwide and countless households are enjoying the PURE experience. We’ve been providing the most comfortable indoor air environments that now include our latest partner, Slash Fitness. They wanted an effective combination of fitness, health & wellness with fresh, healthy, allergy friendly air and we were more than happy to oblige. And Flash is just one of our significant beginnings – we will continue partnering with establishments around the world in order to stay true to our commitment.

How PURE’s Comprehensive Program Works

Works to minimize the presence of allergens and irritants on surfaces and in the air.

Decreases the survival rate of bacteria on moist spots located in fitness centers, such sweaty mats, public seating areas and other damp surfaces.

Gets rid of germs that simple wipe-down cannot destroy.

Applies bacterio-static barrier, called PURE Shield that is applicable to all surfaces, which prevents contaminants from attaching themselves to surfaces while puncturing the membrane bacteria of the cell.

Creates an environment where germs have difficulty in surviving.

Installs a medical grade air purification system, which will continuously circulate and filter the air, thus killing 98% to 100% of viruses and bacteria floating around.

This collaboration between Slash Fitness and PURE results in an environment so clean and fresh, you’d think you’re working out in an unpolluted meadow. So you can be sure that you’re not only in the road to fitness, but you’re working out in a road that’s safe and healthy – making it easier for you to achieve your fitness goals.

Expert Tips to Ward-Off the Flu

Pure Buzz

flu

flu awareness

Flu symtoms

flu virus

flu virus prevention

influenza epidemic

New york

PureRooms

seasonal flu

‘Tis the season to be wary. Coughs, colds and other symptoms brought about by influenza, or the flu for short, are spreading easily and so is the seasonal flu itself. Children and adults alike have been struck by it the past few months; and this year’s flu season have been declared an epidemic.

As a result, employees have been calling in sick, business operations are affected, children are missing precious school days, parents are worried, there was a shortage of vaccines at some point and a lot of people are at risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is a particularly dangerous strain detected to be the culprit for hospitalizing around 3,700 people in the country.

Even if it’s not as bad as the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919, which killed more than 20 million to 40 million victims around the world (that’s more people killed than World War 1), including 675,000 Americans, these are the modern times and we have the means and the knowledge not to suffer from the flu, much less die because of it.

“Chief among them is getting a flu shot,” said Kelly Arehart, Ph.D., Global Innovation Manager for The Healthy Workplace Project, Kimberly-Clark Professional. “But even people who get vaccinated can still get sick. There are additional precautions people should take to keep themselves and the people they spend the most time with healthy, such as adopting a simple three-step ‘wash, wipe, sanitize’ protocol.”

Whether you’re at home, at work, in school or other public places, here are more tried and tested tips to help decrease your chances of catching the flu. And don’t forget to spread the word to your colleagues, friends and family!

Protecting Yourself

Wash & Sanitize Your Hands – Do this frequently using warm water. Scrub soap all over your hands for around 15 to 20 seconds, rinse, dry and apply sanitizers which contain 60% to 90% ethyl alcohol. Remember that some flu viruses can survive up to 2 hours on tables, hand rails, door knobs, phones, etc. So even if there’s no soap and water around, make sure to keep your hand sanitizer handy at all times.

Keep Filthy Hands Off – The flu viruses just love your eyes, nose and mouth. Why? Because that’s their gate pass to wreaking havoc. So unless your hands are totally clean, avoid touching your face. Also, cover your mouth with a disposable napkin every time you cough or sneeze and throw it away immediately into the trash bin. Don’t forget to wash your hands.

Keep Your Stuff Clean – Avoid sharing drinking glasses, cutleries and other utensils. Also, if you happen to share supplies and equipment such as laptops, phones, calculators, etc. remind everyone to wipe them down after using.

Stress Less and Sleep Tight – Avoid stress and make sure that you get the sleeping time you need. High stress levels combined with lack of sleep can contribute to a lower immune system which then leads to greater chances of catching the flu.

Purify, Purify, Purify – Here at PURE, we are always promoting good health and staying safe. Fresh air can be hard to come by nowadays and lack of fresh air means that the flu viruses could be riding the airwaves. Check out our state of the art Air Purifier and our Air Filter systems and see how our technology can help you to stay confident and safe indoors, lessening the chances of the flu looming over you and your family.

With all that being said, the bottom line to avoiding the flu is to keep ourselves and our surroundings clean all the time. But don’t forget the basics like keeping your body hydrated, eating healthy, exercising regularly, limiting your alcohol intake and finally, listening to what your body tells you: If you feel fatigued, take a rest and as they always say, if symptoms persist, consult your doctor.

At PURE, We’re Continuously Taking You Forward

Pure Buzz

air filter

Air purifier

allergies

allergy

Asthma

Fresh air

hotel

hotels

Pure allergy friendly hotels

Pure Room

pure rooms

Our team of trained specialists have always been in pursuit of learning all the latest technologies and innovations relevant to our goals, which include being the best when it comes to providing quality & allergy-friendly atmospheres right from the door knob and up to the air filters of your PURE Room. Leading organizations in the hospitality, medical, real estate, and fitness industries participated and shared the reasons why they’ve embraced PURE as the newest amenity for their discerning customers.

“The minute I was exposed to the concept of PURE Allergy Friendly Rooms, I knew that it belonged in my hotel, for my guests to further be pampered during their stay with us,” says Romil Ratra, the InterContinental’s General Manager during the PURE launch in India.

Similarly, last December in Seoul, South Korea, The W Hotel and PURE Korea joined hands to make PURE’s patented air and surface purification program available to W Hotel guests. Travelers to Seoul with allergies and asthma as well as others with respiratory difficulties can now breathe easier with the introduction of PURE Allergy Friendly Rooms.

PURE has installed its comprehensive indoor environment solution in almost 300 hotels in 13 countries, and today remains a brand standard in all Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. PURE continues to expand in other countries in Asia including Taiwan and China, fulfilling our commitment to providing the healthiest, safest and most enjoyable indoor environments worldwide.

About PURE
PURE is a company who is committed to providing solutions that allow individuals to live a clean, quality lifestyle, at home or on the go. Heightened reactions to mold, spores and dust mites can cause stress, pain and a feeling of discomfort. “Fortunately you don’t have to be sidelined from the festivities. Allergies during the holidays can be beat” –WebMD “During the winter, families spend more time indoors, exposing allergic individuals to allergens and irritants like dust mites, pet dander, smoke, household sprays and chemicals, and gas fumes — any of which can make their lives miserable,” said Dr. William Reisacher. These allergies can come from a line of things, Christmas trees, pets, ornaments, certain foods, high stress levels, Travel. The list goes on and on.

There are many things you can do to prevent this allergy build up. Air filtration systems can be used to cut down airborne allergies, and effects from pet dander, as well as dust mites. Make sure you are constantly washing hands, vacuuming carpets, washing floors and washing sheets in hot water. Another is to make sure Christmas trees and ornaments are not growing mold. Now this may seem far-fetched however mold grows very easily and can be a huge hassle. “Mold spores can cause additional problems compared to pollen allergy because mold grows anywhere and needs little more than moisture and oxygen to thrive,” said Dr. Rachel Miller. While many people think it’s the tree or other seasonal greens causing their holiday allergies, it’s actually the mold spores on these plants. If mold is your nemesis, you may want to steer clear of fresh trees, boughs, and wreaths, says Chiu, and consider switching to artificial decorations. Or, to make live greenery less inclined to trigger allergies during the holidays, try hosing plants down before bringing them inside, to get rid of existing spores. -WebMD. Also try storing decorations in dry containers to reduce moisture.

The allergies don’t stop there however; Stress can be a huge reason for allergy reactions. “Chemicals released by the body during stressful times can cause the muscles around your airways to tighten, making it harder to breathe”- American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology. ”Stress can cause asthma to flare, but it may not do allergy’s good either” writes Kenneth block, MD he maintained that the best ways to bolster your immune system so that it can more easily fend off allergy symptoms is to recognize the effects of stress, anxiety, and other emotions on your immunity and try and avoid them.” He went on to say that simple things such as meditation, yoga, and massage therapy could be used as holiday gifts to yourself.

So look out for allergic reactions this holiday and try and enjoy yourself. Keep air quality strong, carpets bedding and hands washed, and forget about the unnecessary hassles of allergies and live PURE!

Visit PURE.com and shop.pureroom.com today to find products to help better your holiday experience for you, your pets, family and guests.

PURE Helps Hyatt Reach Number 1

Travel

allergic travelers

Hyatt

hyatt hotels

non-allergy destinations

PURE helps hyatt

pure rooms

PURE, an allergy-friendly company with safe products designed to provide fresh sleeping and living environments throughout the world is pleased to announce that their PURE Rooms services helped Hyatt reach number 1 among the top 10 international hotel chains that cater to guests prone to allergies and asthma. This is according to a research project conducted by Sylvane, an air treatment solutions company and AllerPassMD, an independent consumer rating organization.

Other hotels in the top-ten list include Westin, Residence Inn, Four Seasons, Double Tree, Marriott, Hilton, Embassy Suites, Wyndham & Courtyard by Marriott, all mentioned from the top two to ten rankings. The rankings are based on average allergen control ratings. The main considerations were which hotel was the most effective in terms of dust and mite control, mold control, pollen control and being pet-free. Allergen control have all been made possible because of PURE’s commitment to its PURE allergy-friendly hotel rooms, which includes hypo-allergenic bedding encasements and air purification systems.

According to the research, 1 in 5 Americans suffer from asthma and allergies. There are 17.9 million adults who suffer from Hay Fever and 7.1 million children. 8.6 million Children are reported to be with respiratory allergies. However, 83% of Americans said they will be traveling with their families this year. They wanted to go to the beach or another city or go camping. They even wanted to go to amusement parks or go camping outdoors. Statistics show that 78% of Americans have visited at least one country, 61% have visited multiple countries while 36% have travelled to four or more foreign destinations.

Since a lot of people love to travel even when prone to allergies, the research shows the top cities in America who have the most pollen count between February to June. From 1 to 10, this includes: St. Louis Missouri, College Station Texas, Cherry Hill New Jersey, Rochester New York, Kansas City Missouri, Tulsa Oklahoma, Lafayette Louisiana, Charlotte North Carolina and Indianapolis Indiana. PURE recommends checking out their website to check for hotels with PURE Rooms in these areas.

However, Tom Kammerer of PURE suggests that allergy sufferers should choose travel destinations where they can find first-class and allergy-friendly hotels such as Denver, Washington, Tampa, Dallas and Albuquerque. According to Kammerer: “This research is great and can help a lot of travelers who are looking for places where they can enjoy their stay without worrying about sneezing or hives or getting out of breath due to allergies or asthma.”

PURE is all about making lives better, that’s why they create solutions for health conscious individuals who like to travel. The results of this survey are a milestone for the company and part of their strategy is to expand the destinations and accommodations that cater to the needs of travelers who are prone to allergies and asthma.

Allergic travelers companion guide infographic.

About PURE

PURE is a company who is committed to providing solutions that allow individuals to live a clean, quality lifestyle, at home or on the go. It’s not even all about financial aid – there are also a few great acts of heroism. And then there are those countless, little gestures of generosity and kindness, which at the end of the day become absolutely greater than the sum of all its parts.

We saw it during Katrina, we saw it during the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Today, we’re seeing it again in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy which was immediately followed by the great snow storm that hit the US last week and over the weekend.

The damages caused by Sandy were at an estimated $50 billion. The death toll was more than a hundred; thousands of homes underwater and countless were left homeless. Millions of people were left without power for several days.

New Jersey and New York, which took the brunt of Sandy, were reeling once again when a nor’easter’ storm, which brought up about six inches of snow, hit just one week after Sandy came and went. Some people who just got their power back lost it yet again and those evacuees who came home after the hurricane were asked to leave once again.

A lot of people from all over America and even around the world have stepped up to lend a hand to those who are homeless, without power, heat and water. These good Samaritans come from businesses both big and small alike, students, private citizens, government agencies, non-profit organizations, celebrities, etc.

Here at PURE, we are big supporters of positive living and no other act is more positive than the gesture of kindness towards one another in times when kindness is needed most. So we have collated all efforts from all over the country of people who are doing what they can to help those affected by the recent extreme weather conditions. So read on and be inspired.

There are fitness centers in New York and New Jersey who have allowed the storm victims to use their shower facilities for free.

The mayor of Newark opened his home to constituents nearby and allowed them to charge their phones and gadgets & pass the time by watching DVD shows. A lot of households who had power also offered extension power plugs to passersby so they can charge their phones or get in touch with friends and family.

Aside from performing in a tribute concert, Jon Bon Jovi visited his flooded hometown of Sayreville, NJ. Bruce Springsteen & Christina Aguillera, among others, also sang for the victims. Meanwhile Ben Stiller helped feed people in Brooklyn.

Duracell set up charging stations for mobile devices at a public park in Manhattan, called Battery Park. They are also offering free Duracell batteries and flashlights. Another big company, Verizon, provided text and voice for free to those affected.

Children are out on the sidewalk selling various goods, such as cookies, candies and beverages. All profits will be given to the storm victims.

Students, colleges and universities across the country have been doing numerous fund-raising & relief efforts. Some schools are using high profile events such as Homecoming to raise funds. There are also cases where the students themselves took the initiative and hosted activities like all-you-can-eat specials.

Staten Island was one of the most badly hit by the storm and resident Emily Ellington gave out 40 boxes of pizzas to the affected residents in that area. Meanwhile, Andrew Carmellini of The Dutch Manhattan served free soup and salad. Lonestar Taco gave free tacos to people in Lower Manhattan. Various soup kitchens were set up in Queens.

Doctors such as Dr. Dave Ores are providing free medical care. He posted this on Tumblr: “I’m open today if I can help anyone. Until 6pm Spread the word. Thanks. 189 east 2nd street btw A and B’” Banfield Pet Hospital set up free physical exams in more than 140 hospitals of affected areas.

People who were devastated by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans back in 2005 felt a surge of empathy for East Coast. The Daily Reporter of Greenfield Indiana wrote: Church groups, nonprofits, City Hall and individuals in New Orleans and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast have begun sending care packages, donating money and staging volunteers for the clean-up and recovery efforts.

ABC and Disney have teamed up and sponsored an event called “A Day of Giving” Starting with Good Morning America and ending with Jimmy Kimmel Live, it gave viewers a chance to make contributions to the Red Cross. This initiative raised almost $17 million.

We all wish that disasters do not happen but sadly, they’re inevitable. The good thing about it is it brings out the best in a lot of us. And we at PURE have this to say: Let’s keep it up! Remember the smallest things we do, even a kind word or a sincere smile, can mean so much for people who are under so much stress. And if you’re too far away for that, remember that organizations like the Red Cross and iTunes Store are always looking forward to your generosity. Remember to always be positive, stay safe and live PURE and the world is going to be a whole lot better.

Allergies and dogs

Allergies

Allergens

allergies

dog allergies

living pure

sources of allerggies

Allergies can be an overwhelming nuisance for all types of people throughout the world. However, the notion that only humans are affected by allergies is a common misconception. Today we will focus on man’s best friend: yeah that’s right. Even your household pets are affected by airborne allergies.

Canine Atopy is when dogs are exposed to airborne allergies or inhalant allergies and have adverse reactions. While you may think that dogs are used to outdoor environments and that Canine Atopy is a very rare diagnosis, you would be surprised to know that it’s actually more common than you think.

Canine Atopy is the most common form of dog allergy and affects an estimated 10% of all dogs. Atopy typically begins in dogs 1-3 years of age. They may start as late as age six or eight, but over 80% of dogs that have this condition have gotten it at an earlier age. To make matters worse, as the animal ages, he/she usually develops allergies to other things and the response to any one allergen can becomes more severe.

Allergens are generally inhaled through the respiratory tract, but can also be absorbed through skin or the gastrointestinal tract. Sources of allergies range from

• Grass
• Pollen
• Dust
• Mold
• Pollution
• Fabrics

These airborne allergens can be inhaled and then attached to hypersensitive cells in the body causing inflammation that may lead to conditions similar to hay fever in humans. Dog allergies can even be a lot more aggressive and severe. Symptoms can range from runny nose, mild fever, sneezing, coughing, chewing of feet, and even ear infections. The severity is due to the vast amount of receptors in their nasal passages and more nerve endings.

Severe itching and other complications due to canine atopy was the 2nd most common reason VPI pet insurance policyholders took their dogs to the veterinarian last year.

Usually allergies can occur seasonally. Most signs appear in late summer and fall. But there are cases when it can gradually continue through to March and April, May, June and early July and then it can become a year round nuisance. Veterinarians treat the allergies with shots and medication, but as time go on – the severity of the allergies progress, and you end up spending hundreds of dollars a year. The most effective long-term solution is to change the dog’s living circumstances to avoid allergens.

Save money and trips to the vet. Start living PURE in allergy resistant rooms. Miami, Florida, is always a prime destination for those looking to escape the chilly temperatures.

Miami’s beaches, known for having pure white sand and gorgeous blue water, are obviously known to attract huge crowds to the tropical city. Yet, many others are drawn to Miami for the allure of its eclectic range of activities, trendy nightlife, and unique architecture.

For those interested in exploring the sights Miami has to offer, the Cape Florida lighthouse and the Miami Seaquarium are both perfect day trips for people seeking some time away from the beach. A feat in architectural mastery, the District features over 800 pastel colored stucco buildings and constitutes the largest concentration of 1920s and 1930s architecture in the world.

Yet another aspect of Miami that attracts tourists is its cuisine. There is certainly no shortage of restaurants that echo the tropical influence of the city’s Caribbean roots, therefore giving visitors a unique glimpse into this unique blend of cultures.

Unfortunately, there are some pesky irritants that aren’t left behind, even on vacation. For many, fall means a respite from the heat and humidity that typically dominate the summer months; so many people prefer to spend time outdoors. There are many wonderful things to look forward to during this season. Aside from the gorgeous Fall colors exquisitely painted by Mother Nature, you and your family can also enjoy the following:

Pumpkin patches

Hayrides

Lazy, cool weekends by the lake

Retreats to a cozy mountain cabin

Haunted house adventures

Trick or treating

Halloween costume parties

Hot ciders

Pumpkin breads

Butternut squash soups

But however crisp the fall air is & however pleasant temperature, pesky allergens still lurks in the air. For some people, allergies are even more severe in the fall than they are in the spring. Ragweed is a huge allergy trigger for many. Even though it begins pollinating in August, it can actually extend well into the fall months. Mold is also a huge irritant in the fall, since it thrives in damp areas like the piles of leaves that usually line the streets and houses during the autumn months.

Regardless of what triggers your allergies, it seems more than logical to ensure that they don’t affect you this fall, especially when you travel. Enjoy the Fall months for all its splendor and fun by checking in to a PURE room in one of the renowned hotels across the country. Trouble sleeping in the U.S. has been an ongoing problem for generations. However sometimes its not just bad luck that is causing this dissatisfying sleep. There can be very serious reasons you have not been receiving this sleep you have long desired.

Believe it or not allergies are a very big reason for most cases of sleepless nights. All day and night our bodies are exposed to allergies. Sometimes different individuals react differently to these allergies and in more negative ways. Allergic Rhinitis is very common and is when inhalant allergies affect the nasal passages. Swelling of the nasal lining, associated with Allergic Rhinitis can lead to turbulent airflow with snoring as a consequence.

Now we have all had an uncle or grandfather who snores in their sleep. Most times it’s entertaining and comical. However sometimes it’s not a joke. Several studies have suggested a link between Allergic Rhinitis and OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Sleep is dramatically impaired by allergic symptoms and the degree of impairment is related to the severity of these symptoms. People with OSA may suffer from not only daytime sleepiness but also a range of chronic health problems.

Heart disease, stroke, and sexual dysfunction are problems related to OSA. Snoring and other sleep problems are also linked with poor performance in school, lower IQ and even brain damage according to recent studies. Typical sleep apnea patients are middle aged, overweight, smokers and/or live a sedentary lifestyle. However according to NSF’s 2006 “Sleep in America” poll 15% of American adolescents take meds for allergies. With such high rates of sleep disorders and health problems among Allergic Rhinitis patients, getting adequate sleep on a regular basis is essential for mental/physical health and well being.

Don’t you think it’s time to go to sleep and wake up feeling refreshed? Well don’t worry, take a deep breath and live PURE!!

Ozone is OK, as long as it’s the one up there

Pure Buzz

Air Purifiers Purify

allergy

Connecticut Department of Public Health

healthy life

Influence High Ozone Concentration

pure air purifiers

Pure allergy friendly hotels

When we hear the word ozone, we usually associate it with the layer of blanket above us that protects the Earth from the harmful ultra-violet light of the sun. That’s why all of us are constantly urged to do our share to keep the ozone layer intact. But did you know that there’s another kind of ozone and it’s a pollutant? Apparently, when we come into contact with it, it can have potentially harmful effects on our health.

According to the fact sheet published by the Connecticut Department of Public Health, “Ozone, or O3, is a molecule made from three oxygen atoms. The three oxygen atoms form an unstable toxic gas that is highly reactive with other gases in the air. Ground level ozone is a major component of smog. Ozone found high up in the atmosphere, called stratospheric ozone, protects us by shielding us from harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. This “high in the sky” ozone and its beneficial effects should not be confused with the harmful “low to the ground” ozone, or smog.”

Ozone possesses major characteristics that make it an intense cleaning and bleaching agent as well as a disinfectant. However, these powerful properties are harmful to living organisms. For humans, ozone is especially harmful when it attacks our lungs. It can cause inflammation and damage to the cells lining our airways.

Factors That Influence High Ozone Concentration

Industrialized and Populated Areas – Highly industrialized and populated areas have higher ozone levels because they have more traffic and more factories that produce ingredient gasses (VOC’s and NO2). More so if the area is has predominantly hot and sunny days all year long.

Warm Sunny Days – During a cloudless, sunny day, ozone concentration will continue to increase all day long then drops quickly after sunset. This is because heat and sunlight provides energy for ozone formation and ingredient gasses (VOC’s and NO2), which emits ozone, are at high levels during the day contributing to more ozone formation. But after sunset, the energy for ozone formation disappears and there are less ingredient gasses that’s why ozone formation becomes less concentrated.

Products and Equipment – There are various products available today that are known as “ozone generators” which means that when utilized, these products emit the pollutant ozone. Included in the list are: office equipments such as photocopiers and laser printers, industrial manufacturing process of ozone treatment for bottled water and certain kinds electric or ion-generating air purifiers for clear air rooms and spaces.

Not All Air Purifiers Purify

Air purifiers are an important staple in many households and offices today. If you want to improve the quality of air inside your home or office and maintain a healthy lifestyle, then installing an air purification system may seem to be the best choice. But be careful. You may be unwittingly polluting the air with a purifier that intentionally produces ozone, which can potentially lead to adverse respiratory effects.

Let’s take a look at the possible risks associated with ozone-generating products such as air purifiers.

Airway irritation resulting in cough, throat irritation or a general feeling of discomfort in the chest area

Affects allergy control efforts because it aggravates and worsens asthma attacks

Decreases ability to breathe deeply or energetically

Worsens effects of bronchitis, COPD and emphysema

Increases risk of infection in the respiratory system

Permanent lung damage

Symptoms may occur as an effect of ozone exposure. And your lungs can even continue to deteriorate even after the symptoms are gone. On the other hand, harmful effects may take place without you knowing. Children and people with respiratory problems are especially at risks. So it’s better to start being safe today and be mindful of the products you use in your home or office. Whilst we cannot avoid the ozone pollution outdoors, there’s no need to take it indoors as well.

Good thing there’s PURE air purifiers for asthma, clear lungs and clean space. These products do not emit any amount of ozone at all so you and your family are assured of breathing-in nothing but purified air indoors. And when you travel, you can simply stay in one of the many PURE rooms in hotels across America. This way, you can steer clear of ozone as much as possible while being in a clean and allergy-free environment. With the potential to be both an utterly peaceful respite from the hassles of everyday life and an action-packed venture into the beautiful Hawaiian landscape, the islands are truly the perfect blend of relaxation and fun.

Hawaii boasts an incredible selection of beaches, surfing and scuba diving options. Aside from spending your time at the beach, hiking tours and shopping are also two of the favorite activities. All these are complemented by Hawaii’s gorgeous backdrop that beckons visitors to embrace the native Hawaiian experience. The islands also feature many opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in Hawaiian culture by exploring historical landmarks.

Hawaiian dining is also of great emphasis for many travelers, an expectation which is met with both comfort food and indulgent cuisine. The islands feature a comprehensive array of farmers’ markets complete with fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, and other fresh ingredients. For those travelers looking for a more upscale dining experience, sophistication is fused with the understated and serene Hawaiian culture in many restaurants on the islands. For travelers seeking a more traditional Hawaiian dining experience, however, many resorts do have deals on Luaus, which are a great way to celebrate Hawaiian heritage while enjoying a delicious and unique meal.

With all of these amazing opportunities Hawaii offers, who would want to miss out because of allergies? But is nomadic living doable even if you have asthma?

There’s a new breed of backpackers and they are not into budget travels. Instead, they immerse in global cultures even when they stay in comfortable hotels rather than moldy homestays.

Want to be a flashpacker? Don’t let your allergies put a barrier in your adventures. Here are helpful tips on allergy travel other than packing an inhaler in your backpack.

1) Do your homework. Flashpacking or backpacking for an extended period of time appeals to the free-spirited. But that doesn’t mean you will do away with itineraries. Though you shouldn’t have a fixed plan, it never hurts to research beforehand the places you’ll be visiting, the culture, and the accommodations. Reading travel blogs is also helpful.

2) Pollen check. Whether you’re flashpacking Asia or Europe, it always pays to review the pollen count data and know what time of the year is the best time to go. But if you have no choice but to go there during pollen season, be sure to plot the directions to the nearest hospital and pharmacy on your GPS. Stuff your bag with your allergy medications, as some may not be available overseas.

3) Eat, pray, and love yourself. Just because you’re in for adventure travel doesn’t mean you will take your safety for granted. Think about the worst-case scenarios: getting mugged in Thailand, losing your luggage in a Philippine airport, and so on. Always secure your belongings and have a copy of your embassy’s contact details. A phrase book will come in handy, too, when you’re asking non-English speaking locals where the police station is.

4) Breathe Easy. Bed mites, mildew and other irritants are the nightmare of every asthmatic traveler. As a flashpacker, you have a more disposable income than budget travelers or good ‘ol backpackers. Flashpacking gives you the freedom to choose a more comfortable accommodation instead of roughing it out in a backpackers lodge.

Good thing there are PURE Rooms across the country and offshore. You are guaranteed to have a good night’s rest after a day of touring around the city. PURE rooms are protected from allergens and pollutants that could trigger your asthma.

Going somewhere? Find your nearest PURE Room now. Water stains on furniture, cloth, window frosts, and even spider webs hanging from the ceiling produces dank air. Take away the stuffy smell in any room with a purifier dedicated not only to kill the musty odor but also kill the germs, as well. The PURE anti-allergen spray is a potent defense against mold, mildew, pollen, and animal dander smells. Just spray onto dry surfaces and the safe non-toxic chemicals take effect.

2. Easy on the freshener. Sometimes that lemony scent can make you heady. And no, it’s not just your morning sickness that’s making you vomit — with aerosol propellants being mainly composed of flammable gasses, the synthetic smell of canned air fresheners can have an impact on headaches, dizziness and increased heart rates. As with most pregnant women, the olfactory nerves are hyped up that makes strong perfumes and smells hazardous. To make your room freshly smelling, use essential oils like lavender (calming) and jasmine (anti-depressant) to help you prepare for the due date. The PURE tea tree oil is an effective solution in eliminating yeasts, mold, and fungi.

3. Home is where the heart is. The first trimester in your pregnancy is crucial in your fetus’s organ development. While you’re busy trying to create a little haven inside you, let PURE Room take care of you from the outside. Protect yourself from nasal allergies and asthma with PURE’s Combo Pack. This state-of-the-art home purifier is so silent you can even install it in the nursery.

4. Quality air even away from home. Visiting friends and relatives to share the good news? Have a home away from home at any PURE Room. Sounds over the top at first, but not when we tell you that you can also combine your allergy-free travel with a good cause in one great package. PURE is proud to sponsor the Room for Hope.

This one-of-a-kind Respire room is a fundraising project by the Hyatt Regency Boston Hotel and the Children’s Hospital Boston where they teamed up to re-design a hotel room adorned with bathroom tile mosaics and framed artwork by children patients. This corner king room is all yours for an additional of $45/night.

This project’s goal is to raise $25,000 for the Children’s Hospital Boston. Read on to find out the best tips on allergy relief.

1) Moving to a hotter climate can ease your allergies.

You might believe that you can outrun pollen and seasonal allergies by changing your address. But chances are you’re actually one step closer to danger. Shifting climates can trigger your reaction to allergens. How so? When you’re exposed to pollen from unfamiliar plants, your body will often react to that new allergen.

No pollen at the beach? You really can’t be sure as there are ragweeds and other grasses that grow in sandy areas.

2) Flower power can make you achoo.

Wrong again. Though people who come in contact with flowers often develop allergic symptoms, sniffing your favorite bouquet cannot trigger your nasal allergies that easily. The invisible hooligan is actually pollen from weeds, grasses, and tree’s that are carried airborne through the breeze.

3) Eating honey can reduce allergies.

Some say that the pollen content in honey will help in easing allergic rhinitis. But no matter how many jars of honey you consume, there is no scientific claim behind this theory. Honey is not like allergy shots where you get desensitized by the allergens.

4) You will outgrow your allergies.

Sometimes, you will outgrow your childhood allergies. However, most hay fever sufferers bring the allergy with them when they reach adulthood. This claim is backed by a Swedish hospital research wherein they tested 82 patients with allergic rhinitis 12 years later. 99% of the controlled group stated that they still have hay fever years after, though 39% said their condition improved.

5) Airborne mold allergies only strike indoors.

Spores by mold and fungi are found anywhere – outdoors or indoors. They grow best in damp weather … in soil, decaying leaves, and rotten wood. Molds love spring because they thrive on the plants that died during the previous cold season.

6) Hay fever comes from hay.

Don’t be confused. Hay fever is not caused by hay… well; it’s not even a fever. The other name for hay fever is allergic rhinitis and it is triggered by molds, grass, and pollen. People living in the rural areas often develop immunity against these plant pollens. If you are a regular urbanista, always be wary of allergic reactions when visiting farms and the countryside.

7) Those who didn’t have childhood allergies will not have them in their later years.

Allergies often begin in childhood. But you can develop allergies as an adult, too. Some occur after you change your environment and encounter new allergens. Some adults redevelop symptoms they had during childhood.

———————–

At PURE Rooms we are always looking to offer expert advice to allergy sufferer’s worldwide. If you have a question or simply enjoyed the article, please leave us your comments below and we will respond as soon as possible.

Have a PURE’ly wonderful day!

The Road Ninja’s Guide to Pollen Sabotage

Allergies

air quality

allergy

asthma travel tips

PURE products

Tips every road warrior should know about pollen allergies. The pollen count typically shoots up during mornings and on dry, windy days. Keep low, shut the window, and use the a/c.

Stay indoors during pollen red alert. Yes, you may be a pollen ninja but when you’re dealing with an invisible enemy, you better stay inside the house. Wait for sunup or sundown to exercise outside. Come out when its dark and stay in the shadows like a true ninja would.

Dodge pollen traps. It’s a downer to do your own laundry while you’re on a business trip. But please resist the urge to hang your boxers (or any laundry for that matter) outside as they will collect pollen.

Be a grass shinobi. Ancient wisdom says avoid natural elements that could over power you. But it’s no brainer to veer away from grass pollens from freshly mowed lawns.

Call for ninja backup. In whatever mission – whether it be business trip or family vacation – when the going gets rough, the tough gets medications. Stock up on antihistamines, decongestants, eye drops, nasal sprays, and asthma meds. Better yet, add immunotherapy shots to your weaponry.

Find an anti-allergy sanctuary. Allergy friendly rooms are no longer legends. PURE Rooms give you respite while you’re away on a business trip. Read on how this new study can improve the lives of millions suffering from allergic reactions.

A joint study made by scientists in Trinity College Dublin and the United Kingdom leads to a new development of a novel cell associated with allergies. This discovery opens new doors in treating asthma and other allergic diseases. The findings are published in the internationally-acclaimed research journal Nature Immunology.

The work is attributed to Prof. Padraic Fallon, Science Foundation Ireland Stokes Professor of Translational Immunology of TCD’s School of Medicine anad Dr. Andrew McKenzie of Cambridge’s Medical Research Council Laboratory for Molecular Biology.

The population stricken with allergic diseases especially asthma and atopic dermatitis is increasing globally. Statistical studies show that Irish children have the fourth highest incidence rate of asthma across the globe. Lately, researches on the treatment to allergic reactions are leaning towards understanding the processes and pointing out cells that have triggered allergic inflammation.

Prof. Fallon and his team observes a new white blood — the nuocyte – that brings forth the early generation of immune responses that can later on develop into asthma or allergies. The new medical study singles out a new path on a nuocyte’s maturity and a transcription factor known as RORalpha. Thanksgiving and Black Friday are behind us and that light we see at the end of the tunnel is the Christmas Train barreling at us. This inevitably means that we will be visiting co-workers, family members and friends and breathing the air in their homes. If these holiday hosts have pets it can create a Grinch-like experience for those of us with allergies and asthma.

Robert Preidt of HealthDay and USA Today wrote this weekend about ways to cater to the needs of our guests who have allergies and asthma and guess what what he said? Essentially you should treat your home the same way Pure treats a PURE Allergy Friendly Hotel Room. In his article he specifically recommends that hosts “…wash bedding in hot water to eliminate dust mites,” and guests “…consider bringing your own pillow or allergen-proof pillow cover”.

These are fantastic ideas and I recommend for an allergy-friendly holiday. You could however let vacationers stay in a Pure Room and virtually ensure that their allergies and asthma will not interfere with their holiday revelry. You can find a Pure Room anywhere in the world right at the bottom of this page. Allergy friendly travel is pretty cool, huh?

Today Pure offers Air Purifiers and Mattress and Pillow Encasement for your home and we will soon make our Anti-Allergen Spray and Tea Tree Oil available as well.
-Tom Pickles

Allergy friendly alternative, PURE Rooms relieve stress for frequent travelers

Healthy Lifestyle

Allergy-free travel is now possible by simply booking a Pure Room. Read how one business traveler reduced the stress while being away from home.

In a recent article in USA Today, Gary Stoller wrote an interesting article on Tips to take stress out of big-city business trips. In this article he speaks to multiple very frequent travelers that suffer from something that psychologists call “anticipatory anxiety”. This is a built up fear of the unknown about the logistics of their impending trip. People are nervous about getting a cab in NYC or public transportation in LA or will the meeting be in a safe area. The travelers all shared the ways that they deal with this added stress. Their remedies included things like working out in the gym at the hotel, sitting in a juccuzzi or hiring a driver. One person, Joe Harvey, says she reduces stress by taking steps BEFORE she travels while she is still at home. On the morning of her trip, she likes to “…sit on the front porch and…breathe the fresh air…”. If this helps Joe BEFORE her trip, when she gets to her destination her stress would melt away if she stayed in a PURE Room.

When a business/frequent traveler sleeps in a PURE Room they are breathing the best air that can be had in an allergy-free hotel room. The chance that they will come in contact with any of the “ICK” from the previous guest is virtually zero. A PURE Room is a healthy, allergy friendly alternative for every guest but if you are in a hotel room 200+ nights a year the benefits of PURE Room are even greater.

Joe and every other traveler deserve air this good. PURE Rooms are Making Lives Better all over the world, you should have one too.

Tom Pickles

Pure Relationship Manager

Say good bye to untimely asthma attacks while you’re on the road. We encourage all guests to live without boundaries at home as well as traveling. We take many steps to certify our PURE Allergy Friendly Rooms, so we do offer a few of those products on our PURE at Home site to guests!

PURE’s microfiber mattress and pillow encasements are key to prevent dust and dust mite allergens. Another great feature is our Standard and Small Air Purifiers. These are both listed as a Class II Medical device that will kill 98-100% of bacteria and viruses improving the air quality, allowing you to breathe easier at home or in your office. The first set of filters are included then replacements are sold separately. We offer our PURE Tea Tree Oil, a natural product, which should be placed in an area to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. And lastly our PURE Anti-Allergen plant based spray renders allergens harmless at the source. This can be used on both hard and soft surfaces and is safe to spray around children and pets.

Please visit our site www.pureroom.com/pure_home for more information!

Thank you,

Lindsay Hall
PURE Team

Traveling with Asthma Made Easy: 5 Amazing Tips

Travel

asthma travel tips

Traveling with asthma and other respiratory allergies? Visit www.pureroom.com search tool to help you find hotels in the area that you are traveling to that have PURE or Respire Rooms. We recommend to keep the purifier on a medium setting to circulate the air in the room every 15 minutes.

2. Check the pollen count of the city you are traveling to. This will help determine how much medication you will need if you are going to be outdoors. Remember, pollens are a major deal breaker when you are traveling with asthma.

3. Pack your medication in your carry on or in close reach. They are no good stowed away under the plane!

4. When flying, be sure to cover any travel pillow with PURE’s microfiber travel encasements.

5. Wherever you may be laying your head at night, always ask the housekeeping to remove down comforters or feathered pillows from the room.

Now, you can have that ultimate getaway without worry about breakouts. Have fun!

Asthma and Allergies Begone with PURE Rooms

Healthy Lifestyle

PURE Solutions is trying to standardize the way Hotels and the travel industry handles germs, bacteria and viruses. Pure Room’s Hypoallergenic hotel rooms, the New Age of hotel cleanliness. Read on to know more about this unique accommodation. Book one and make your travel worth the while.

With Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) hitting the forefront of headlines nationwide, there is a new wave of innovation coming to your favorite vacation destinations: Pure Rooms. People suffering from allergies, asthma, or who are just wanting to have the reassurance of a deeply cleaned and sanitized hotel room will be pleased to learn of this relatively new and inexpensive option starting to show up across the country. For travelers with sensitive respiratory systems, the sense of dread of discomfort from staying in an unsanitary hotel room may finally be put to rest.

At first glance, you may not notice any difference from a regular suite down the hall, but upon further investigation, you will begin to see what makes these rooms so unique. Because they are maintained with extreme attention to detail, these new Pure Rooms claim to remove up to 99% of pollutants from the air and environment. With freedom from bacteria, mold, dust mites, and bed bugs, you can now be assured that you’ll be able to sleep easy when you’re away from home.

Pure Room, with their 7-step, patent-pending process of sanitizing not only the room but also the air and environment as well, may just give you the most enjoyable stay you could imagine. The process includes surface and air cleaning systems designed to not only kill and remove harmful pollutants but also maintain the same level of IAQ throughout your stay.

The hotel room appointments could also be an issue in allergies and asthma. Thus, Pure Room also pay particular attention to the bedding and mattress. Every Pure Room includes a hypoallergenic mattress and pillow encasement. These act as a barrier against dust mites and other potential contaminants. This is possibly the most important step of the process since the majority of time spent in the room will be in the bed itself.

One of the final steps in the preparation of the Pure Room is to apply a surface shield which bonds to all surfaces, making it impossible for bacteria to grow. This bacteriostatic barrier insures that your room is ready and virtually free from any IAQ pollutants.

On top of dedicating individual rooms to Pure Rooms, hotel companies are now beginning to dedicate complete wings and floors of hotels to these cleaner, more healthy suites. With the growing concern of IAQ and how it can affect certain individuals, this is a trend we are sure to see continue and expand over the next few years.

What type of clientele use Pure Rooms? Some have existing medical conditions that make them sensitive to allergens, mold and other concerns related to cleanliness, but many Pure Room guests don’t have any health issues at all. They are simply looking for the cleanest hotel room experience possible and enjoy the many micro-amenities offered by these types of rooms. A peace of mind for the many people who are uncomfortable with the cleaning standards applied to the average hotel room.

While the Pure Room experience does sound refreshing, it also comes at a cost. If you wish to reserve an experience in one of these cleaner than most rooms you can expect to pay an average of 15-20% more per night than you would for a regular room. The worthiness of such an environment has to be made by the guest, depending on their views and situation.

As the popularity of Pure Rooms continues to soar, you can expect to start seeing them become the norm in most hotels across the country. It’s just another sign of an increased awareness of Allergies, Asthma and a positive step forward for the fight against poor Indoor IAQ.
